Inside the crater of an active volcano – Nisyros, Greece

We visited the caldera of the active volcano of the island of Nisyros.

We visited the Stefanos crater, in the caldera of the volcano of the island of Nisyros.

The Stefanos crater has an elliptical shape with 185m at its narrowest point and 250m at its widest.
Its walls are 30 meters high and it is estimated to be between 3000 and 4000 years old.
The entire area has a deep sulfur odor.

The last eruptions of the volcano were between 1881-87 and were of the phreatic type.
A phreatic eruption is one that occurs when the magma of a volcano, whose temperature is extreme (600 Cº-1170 Cº), comes into contact with the ground or a surface that contains water, which evaporates rapidly causing an explosion of vapor, water, ash, stones, etc.
