Porto Hydra – The Venice of the Saronic Gulf. It is a residential real estate development. It has 3.5km of canals, more than 300 houses, 3 islands connected between themselves and 9 bridges. According to its official website, construction began in the mid-1970s and it is still expanding.
We visited the Stefanos crater, in the caldera of the volcano of the island of Nisyros.
The Stefanos crater has an elliptical shape with 185m at its narrowest point and 250m at its widest.
Its walls are 30 meters high and it is estimated to be between 3000 and 4000 years old.
The entire area has a deep sulfur odor.
The last eruptions of the volcano were between 1881-87 and were of the phreatic type. A phreatic eruption is one that occurs when the magma of a volcano, whose temperature is extreme (600 Cº-1170 Cº), comes into contact with the ground or a surface that contains water, which evaporates rapidly causing an explosion of vapor, water, ash, stones, etc.
Of the fortification, 80m of the eastern wall survive, which includes 2 towers and 230m of the southern wall, which includes 6 towers and several of the staircases. In addition, the southeastern gate, which is preserved intact and is 2.10m wide, reached our days. It is located in a recess and the lintel was built with stone blocks 3m long.
There is an inscription on the exterior wall, to the north of the surviving gate.
The inscription says: ΔΑΜΟΣΙΟΝ ΤΟ ΧΩΡΙΟΝ ΠΕΝΤΕ ΠΟΔΕΣ ΑΠΟ ΤΟ ΤΕΙΧΕΟΣ which could be translated as: PUBLIC ACCESS FROM 5 FEET OF THE WALL.
And it established the width of the restricted area outside the wall that had to remain free for defensive uses.
This was so that if the city were under attack, the attackers would not jump to the wall from the roofs of the neighboring houses built outside…
This inscription is believed to be from 325-300 BC.
