Monday, March 7th, was Katara Deutera (“Clean Monday”), the first day of Greek Orthodox Lent.

People typically fly kites and eat lagana (a type of unleavened bread with sesame seeds), taramosalata (fish roe purée), beans, and seafood.

In the heart of Athens, a short distance from the Acropolis, stands the Benizelos House (Mpenizelos), the oldest house in Athens. It is a “konaki,” an 18th-century Ottoman house.

On Mount Hymettus, there is a drakospito (or drakospiti), or dragon house, a type of stone building that predates the Classical period.

In this video, we visit both places.

The cave of Ninfolepto in Athens

On Mount Hymettus or Ymittos, a few kilometers from the center of Athens, there are 3 caves, very close to each other.

The most interesting of these 3 caves is the Cave of the Nimfolepto, of Argedimus, of Pan or of the Muses. It is an underground temple, carved by Argedimus of Thera (today, Santorini) in the fourth century BC.

It is thought that it may have been the place that inspired Plato for the allegory of the cave.

New infrastructure in historic cities

The likelihood of archaeological discoveries is very high when public works projects are underway, often requiring work to be halted until a survey of the findings has been completed.

Today we visited two streets in the city of Sparta, an excavation no more than 70 meters long by 1 meter wide, and saw a portion of what they found.
